Tips for Choosing Hiking Shoes/Boots – Reminder
Here is some tips I like to share when purchasing new boots and shoes. When purchasing new hiking boots and shoes, there are several characteristics to consider. First and foremost, your feet are going to be working hard for you on the trail and are going to take a beating. It is imperative that you protect your feet as well as choose a shoe that fits your feet. Improperly fitting shoes can cause more than just blisters, calluses or foot pain, it can also affect your stride which in turn can affect your hips and back. Test your shoes out before going on a long hike.
Below are some options to consider of when choosing hiking shoes.
- Shoes or Boots: Shoes tend to go only to the ankle while boots will cover the ankle. Shoes are a great lightweight option however, boots will provide more ankle support
- Waterproof: It is important to consider if you will need waterproof shoes/boots. Waterproof may be important if your hikes take you on trails that go through puddles and creeks. It will also be important if you are hiking in rainy weather or in snow. On the other side of that, if you are hiking in warm/hot areas that are dry, waterproof shoes may be hot and create a very uncomfortable hiking experience for your feet.
- Quality: Make sure you are buying good shoes. You want shoes that are made with quality materials and from companies that know hiking. Every part of the shoe has a purpose so make sure the linking to the heel and sole of the shoe are made for hiking.
- Styles: There are many styles of hiking shoes and boots. Many are catered to particular terrains or hiking trips. Hiking shoes are good for day hikes or shorter overnight trips, however if you are going mountaineering or backpacking.
- Material: Taking into consideration style of the shoe/boot goes hand in hand with the type of material being used. Synthetics (nylon, polyester, etc) or leather, or a blend of the two will play a part in how comfortable your shoes are. Synthetics are lighter while leather is not but synthetics are not as durable as leather.
Performance
The Salomon X Crest Women’s Hiking shoe have a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. Many of the reviews agree that the shoes are lightweight, comfortable and wear well for hiking. They have great support of the foot, including the arch. They do have removable insoles if you have preferred insoles you like to use. Shoes are very breathable with very few complaints about sweaty and hot feet.
As far as complaints, the majority of them do revolve around fit. Definitely try on the shoe and test it out to see how it works for you.
Salomon X Crest Women’s Hiking Shoe
Overall, I love these shoes. They are very supportive when I wear them. I like that when I am hiking on an incline, my feet are supported and my toes don’t crunch into the top of the shoes. My heels are comfortable and more importantly my back isn’t hurting from compensating for my feet.
When I did try on the shoes it was suggested I go up a size but they were too big. When I tried my regular size (9), there was still room for a good pair of socks. It does fit snug on the widest part of my foot which makes me feel more secure in the shoe.
I have worn these shoes on 3 hikes. Each hike was at least 2 hours in length. The shoes work well for me and I did not have any complaints. I did not go through any water or wet weather so unable to speak to how effective the waterproof is.
I did walk on the sand along a beach, and except for the fact that I am not a fan of walking on sand with shoes on, they were supportive.
I do like the material of these shoes. My feet do not get overly hot. We have had some unseasonably hot days and my feet still felt comfortable throughout my hikes. I like to wear these shoes when I’m running around town as well because I like how they feel on my heels.
Just as a note, I also have the Merrill Moab 2 Vent. Both shoes are comparable and work well for me. I have been wearing the Salomons more often however, that is so I can test them out. The Merrills are wider on my foot, in the toe area, than the Salomon.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments. If you currently have this shoe and would like to share your experience, please comment below. I would love to hear from you!
Happy Hiking,
Michelle Louise
